Miracle Theatre has done it again. Producer Anne Laughlin and Director Ted Price have announced that the theatre’s most recent production raised $187,133.82 to be donated to yet another community cause for Prince George. The professional theatre has now contributed a total of $1,251,846 to an array of worthy local causes over the last ten years.
The proceeds from this year’s comedy, “The Garage Sale” by David King, will create a permanent endowment: the Prince George Mobility Disorder Support Fund. The endowment will make annual funding available to support local activities, programs, and initiatives for those dealing with neurologically based mobility conditions. These include Parkinsons, MS, ALS, Huntington’s, Alzheimer’s, and stroke.
Funds raised came from box office, sponsorships, donations, and concession sales. All proceeds have been turned over to the Prince George Community Foundation. The Foundation will be the permanent trustees of the Mobility Disorder Fund.
Laughlin and Price commented that they became determined to establish the Mobility Fund after learning two things about Prince George.
Laughlin said that, “The medical experts we met with emphasized that these conditions invariably come to people in their middle and later years. As our community is aging so rapidly, the number of people in Prince George dealing with these conditions is increasing at an unsettling rate.”
Price added, “Then we interviewed local people with first-hand experience. They all told us again and again that, once diagnosed, the local support available is minimal or only available in the major centres. We hope the fund will be a small step towards changing that situation.”
Laughlin and Price expressed their high opinion and appreciation of the Prince George Community Foundation as the steward of the Mobility Disorder Fund. Rae Ann Noonan, Executive Director of the Foundation, remarked that, “Miracle Theatre has already created four other endowments with the foundation. These include the Children of Prince George Fund, the Prince George Hospice Fund, the Prince George Refugee and Hope Fund, and the Prince George Seniors’ Emergency Fund. We are deeply grateful for Miracle Theatre’s continued trust in the Foundation. It’s always meaningful when a family, individual, company, or organization chooses to create a lasting impact through an endowment fund, and we hope these funds inspire others to consider how they too can support our community’s future, through the Prince George Community Foundation.”
When asked how they accounted for the success of his year’s project, Laughlin and Price gave credit to three factors. They said that Prince George is a true theatre town where there is always a lot of enthusiasm for good productions. “And with The Garage Sale, credit also goes to the caliber of our volunteers, along with the quality of the performers and David King, the playwright,” said Price. Both emphasized that the third and main key to Miracle Theatre’s recurring success is the remarkable level of community generosity and support.
